Phinizy Swamp Duck Watching
January 13, 2024
Did you know the Southeast is home to almost 20 species of ducks that come in all shapes & sizes? Unique ducks like Blue-winged Teal, Lesser Scaup, Northern Shovelers, and Ring-necked Ducks all make Phinizy Swamp their winter home to escape the frigid Northern waters during the winter months. Phinizy Swamp Nature Park is a man-made wetland that aids in water treatment for the City of Augusta. Wetlands like these are paradises for local wildlife. Aside from ducks, Bald Eagles are a common sight around the wetland. We’ll also see unique birds like American Coots, Common Gallinule, King Rails, and Pied-billed Grebes out in the wetland cells of the park, and we may get lucky & run across the occasional alligator.
