September 2 & 3, 2023
Did you know that North America’s largest Salamander species is right up the road in the Blue Ridge Mountains? Looking at a Hellbender is like witnessing the first creature to crawl on land from the ocean millions of years ago. Western North Carolina is home to a very healthy population of Hellbenders, and we could not be more excited to encounter these incredible animals. From late Augutst to early September, Hellbenders are breeding and competing for den sites. During this time they are moving around the river systems more frequently during the day. They’re typically nocturnal, so this is the best time of year to see them.
This adventure is not for the faint of heart; water temperatures average around 55 degrees & you’ll be fighting the current as you zigzag the river crawling over & around rocks looking for Hellbenders. Once we find a Hellbender, we’ll alert everyone & you can gather around to view these incredible creatures. It’s an adventure you’ll be telling your friends about for a long time.

We will meet at the Champion Park Pool (38 Main St, Rosman NC) just outside of Brevard at 9:30am. Our guide Kevin will meet us and brief us as well as provide wetsuits and masks for those who need them. After we gear up, we'll follow Kevin and carpool to an undisclosed location within and around the Pisgah National Forest. Once we arrive, we'll make our way down to the river and hop in the water. We'll be snorkeling for about 3 hours. Once we find a Hellbender, Kevin or I will signal the rest of the group and we'll gather around and admire the animal having plenty of time for taking pictures. We'll also have opportunities to view the diversity of unique fish species that live in the mountain rivers. We'll eventually make our way down river to the take out spot and head back to our vehicles at Champion Park Pool.
